“Removing the CJ was a low moment in Mahama’s legacy,” says Richard Ahiagba, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as he criticises President John Dramani Mahama over the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice when he resumed office in 2025.
Ahiagba made the remarks on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme while contributing to a discussion on a petition seeking the removal of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Electoral Commission’s dismissal of related claims.
He argued that the decision to remove the then chief justice remains a stain on Mahama’s record and continues to shape perceptions of political interference in state institutions.
According to him, actions taken during that period have contributed to what he described as ongoing attempts to destabilise key institutions, particularly as the country approaches elections.
Mr Ahiagba urged Ghanaians to guard against what he characterised as partisan interference in state bodies.
However, representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the programme, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, pushed back, defending institutional reforms undertaken during Mahama’s tenure as necessary steps to strengthen accountability and democratic governance.
