‘Any attempt to cut expenditure is welcome’ — Collins Adomako-Mensah

The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North District, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has expressed support for government efforts to reduce expenditure on national events, including the Independence Day celebration.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV, the lawmaker said that any attempt to cut down spending should be welcomed, particularly at a time when the country faces pressing economic and social challenges.

“Any attempt to cut down expenditure is welcome. I don’t think anybody should have a problem with a country whereby there are very pressing concerns elsewhere if the government decides to use this as an opportunity to cut expenditure,” he stated.

Adomako-Mensah acknowledged media personality Paul Adom-Otchere’s observation that holding the Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House could affect small-scale economic activities. Such events typically provide opportunities for vendors selling water, kenkey, Ghana flags, and other items, allowing them to earn income during the celebration.

While noting he does not begrudge Paul Adom-Otchere’s comments, the MP reiterated his support for initiatives aimed at reducing public spending. However, he expressed a preference for the continuation of the rotational system, where Independence Day celebrations are held in different regions across the country.

Adomako-Mensah recalled attending celebrations in locations such as Cape Coast and the Ashanti Region during the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing the experience as exciting and beneficial to the host regions.

He suggested that the government could maintain the rotational system while operating within the same allocated resources.
