Ban on corporal punishment to be blamed for indiscipline in schools – Fmr. Odododiodio MP

Former Odododiodio MP Nii Lante Vanderpuye has blamed the rising level of indiscipline in Ghanaian schools on the decision to ban corporal punishment, arguing that the move has weakened authority and discipline in classrooms.

He told Moro Awudu on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, October 3, 2025, that the abolition of caning and other physical forms of discipline has led to a “serious breakdown of discipline” among students.

“I am somebody who was very uncomfortable when the whole issue about removing corporal punishment came up. I totally found it very, very wrong,” he said.

“This has led to serious breakdown of discipline in most of our schools because students are now doing things and they go away with it.”

According to him, the ban has stripped teachers of their ability to enforce rules effectively, leaving them frustrated and powerless.

“Teachers cannot accept their responsibility and mandate the way they’re supposed to,” he said, adding that many educators he’s spoken to share similar concerns but are afraid to speak out.

The former MP described the situation as alarming and said it demands urgent national attention.

“As a parent, I’m worried about the level of moral decadence in our secondary schools. It’s terrible,” he lamented.

Vanderpuye called for a fresh national dialogue on education and discipline, insisting that restoring order and respect in schools must be a top priority.

“We must have a whole general discussion about education again,” he urged.
