Minority call for ECG report on fast depletion of prepaid units

The Minority caucus in Parliament has called on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to release its report on the allegations of fast depletion of prepaid units.

The caucus believes that Ghanaians have been subjected to inflated tariffs based on outdated economic factors, resulting in an estimated overcharge of 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, March 18, the member of parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Collins Adomako-Mensah stated that the delay in the release of ECG’s report on the issue is a strain on citizens

“It has been three weeks since the minister’s directive, yet the report has not been published, and the minister has not addressed the public. Consumers are still watching their prepaid credits being drained.

“The Minister for Energy must submit the full investigation report provided by ECG. Ghanaians deserve to know the scale of the problem and the collective actions taken.”

Meanwhile the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) summoned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on February 26 over reports of prepaid units depleting unusually fast.

The February 26 PURC meeting was expected to clarify how the tariff adjustment was integrated into the prepaid metering system, review any system parameter changes, and provide a report on the scale of consumer complaints and proposed resolution measures.
