National Communications Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Tonto, has delivered a scathing attack on President John Dramani Mahama, declaring that his administration has failed in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Tonto did not mince words.
“President has failed. His fight against galamsey is a disgrace,” he stated.
The outspoken NPP communicator accused the government of lacking the political will and concrete strategy needed to tackle the environmental crisis that continues to destroy water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across the country.
Galamsey has remained a major national concern for years, with successive governments facing criticism over their inability to fully eradicate the destructive practice despite repeated promises and operations. Many Ghanaians expected stronger action from President Mahama, who made firm commitments during his campaign to deal decisively with illegal mining.
Tonto’s comments come amid growing public frustration as reports of renewed galamsey activities surface in various parts of the country. Environmental groups and affected communities have repeatedly called for urgent and sustained intervention, including stricter enforcement, community involvement, and alternative livelihood programmes for affected youth.
Kofi Tonto’s strong remarks reflect the NPP’s view that the current government is falling short on one of the most pressing environmental and economic challenges facing Ghana today.
Many citizens are demanding accountability and more effective measures to protect the country’s natural resources for future generations.
