One Job, Three Shifts, Three Workers: Promise Or Pure Deception: The Youth Must Be Disappointed In Mahama

During the 2024 campaign season, former President John Dramani Mahama sold a glittering dream to the Ghanaian youth: “One Job, Three Shifts, Three Workers.” It was presented as the magic formula to end unemployment, ignite productivity, and create endless opportunities for young people desperate for hope.

Based on this promise, John Dramani Mahama overwhelmingly got voted for.

Today, 11 months into the Mahama administration, the reality is painfully clear: not a single job structured under this model has materialised. Not one sector has adopted it. Not one policy document outlines its implementation. Absolutely no show.

One Job, Three Shifts, Three Workers has turned into “Aboa Butu Black”.

A promise this grand should, by now, have shown signs of life, a pilot programme, a framework, a timeline, a budget allocation, something. Instead, what we see is deafening silence. No mention in national addresses. No roadmap in the 2025 or 2026 budgets. No ministry is taking ownership. Nothing.

This raises the uncomfortable but necessary question: Was this promise a visionary policy or simply a political charade meant to win votes?

Because if it wasn’t deception, why is there no evidence of planning or implementation after almost a year in office? Why hasn’t the government engaged private sector players? Why is there no inter-ministerial collaboration, especially with Employment, Trade, and Youth & Sports? Why is Parliament not debating it?

This is not just another political promise lost in the wind. This is a commitment that formed a core part of Mahama’s youth appeal, a commitment young people took seriously. They voted believing it would translate into real jobs, not lofty rhetoric.

At this point, many Ghanaian youths are beginning to feel that the ‘One Job, Three Shifts, Three Workers’ slogan may have been nothing more than electoral bait, a beautifully packaged promise with no intention of being fulfilled.

If the government truly meant it, then the nation deserves to see a plan. If not, then it becomes clear: the youth were misled, their hopes exploited, and their trust traded for votes.
