Ofori-Atta saga: Stop the charade and go to court – Adomako Kissi to Special Prosecutor

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has criticised the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, describing his handling of the case against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a “charade.”

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Dr. Adomako Kissi said the Special Prosecutor should proceed to court and prosecute Mr. Ofori-Atta if he has substantial evidence, instead of focusing on efforts to extradite him.

According to him, the former Finance Minister could be tried in absentia since he has legal representation in Ghana.

According to him, the former Finance Minister could be tried in absentia since he has legal representation in Ghana.

“Go to court… prosecute or make your case in court, and maybe he is found guilty or acquitted. I think enough of the hullabaloo of getting him here. Go to court, he won’t be the first person who has been tried in absentia. Get your dockets sorted out and go to court if you have what you think is substantial or meritorious for prosecution,” he said.

Dr. Adomako Kissi added that the Special Prosecutor should focus on building a solid case instead of creating public spectacle.

“Get your case intact, build it, and take it to court. He has lawyers in this country to deal with them, and enough of all this international noise and seeming to be doing something. I have observed very powerful prosecutors work in silence; enough of the charade.

“I get troubled when people’s reputations are destroyed. To do all this ‘Interpol thing’ when in fact you have not gone through the necessary things,” he stated.

The former MP also questioned the motive behind the Special Prosecutor’s insistence on extraditing Mr. Ofori-Atta, arguing that some of the issues raised had already been addressed by the former minister’s lawyers.

“This is a case where even the lawyers apparently proffered some solution to some of the questions you had, so then it begs the question, is it the in-person that makes a difference, or is it the answers that make the difference?” he asked.

Dr. Adomako Kissi further expressed concern about the proliferation of prosecutorial bodies in Ghana, insisting that the Office of the Attorney-General is sufficient to handle criminal cases.

In January 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) named Ken Ofori-Atta as a suspect in multiple corruption-related investigations, including alleged irregularities in contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), expenditures linked to the National Cathedral project, and issues concerning health and tax refund operations.

However, nearly ten months after he was declared a “fugitive from justice” in February, Mr. Ofori-Atta has neither been arrested in the United States nor returned to Ghana voluntarily.
