A major fire has swept through parts of Kantamanto’s Tarzan Lane, a busy commercial area near Ecobank in central Accra, destroying several shops in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the blaze started around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. Firefighters from multiple stations were quickly deployed after a distress call was received at 01:31 hours. The first fire engine arrived on scene eleven minutes later.

In all, seven fire engines and a turntable ladder were mobilised from the Circle, Industrial Area, Accra Regional Headquarters, Madina, and Legon stations, along with two appliances from the National Headquarters, to battle the flames. After more than three hours of intensive firefighting, the fire was confined at 04:49 hours.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong led senior officers, including the Director of Operations and the Greater Accra Regional Commander, to the site to assess the situation and coordinate the response.

One firefighter reportedly suffered smoke inhalation and asphyxiation during the operation. He was given first aid on site and later transported to hospital by personnel from the National Ambulance Service for further treatment.

Fire crews remain on the ground to extinguish residual hotspots and prevent any possible reignition as investigations begin into what caused the blaze.
