A member of the NPP Communication Team, Alfred Thompson, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s comments on the fight against illegal mining, calling them hypocritical and inconsistent with earlier political realities.
His comments come after President Mahama acknowledged that galamsey is entrenched across political, traditional, and local structures, cautioning that efforts to combat the practice would be challenging but necessary.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Thursday, March 19, he argued that this undermines earlier campaign promises to tackle the menace decisively.
According to Thompson, the President’s remarks suggest a reluctance to act against party affiliates engaged in illegal mining.
He insisted that the involvement of political actors in galamsey was widely known long before the elections, making the President’s current stance inconsistent.
“Over a year into office, you now tell us it appears people within your own party are deeply involved, making the fight difficult. That is a hypocritical statement,” he said, adding that Ghanaians were already aware of the extent of political involvement in illegal mining activities.
