Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has disclosed that several Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) in the Ashanti Region and other parts of Ghana are undertaking borehole projects at an average cost of GH¢100,000 each, with approval from the government.

According to him, the initiative is part of an authorised effort to expand access to water in various communities, rather than an arbitrary exercise.

Speaking on Oyerepa FM on Monday, March 31, the Old Tafo MP stated, “I can confidently disclose that the Asokwa MCE and other MCEs in the Ashanti Region have been drilling boreholes costing an average of GH¢100,000.” He emphasised that the figures reflect what is currently being implemented on the ground.

Mr. Assafuah, who previously served as Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, underscored his familiarity with such projects, insisting that the process has received the necessary backing.

“Don’t forget I have been a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development before, and I know there has been approval for the MCEs to be drilling these boreholes,” he added.

However, the Asokwa MCE, who was present in the studio during the discussion, disputed the GH¢100,000 average cited by the MP. He noted that in his municipality, borehole projects cost between GH¢80,000 and GH¢90,000 on average, indicating variations in pricing across districts.
