Manhyia South MP Raises Concerns Over Special Prosecutor’s 2026 Budget

Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, addressed the concerns surrounding the substantial budget allocation for the Office of the Special Prosecutor for the upcoming 2026 financial year.

A total of GH¢158,936,458.00 has been proposed for the office, but Baffour Awuah argued that this significant amount of public funds might be misaligned with the office’s core mandate and overall priorities.

“I have submitted my comments on the report concerning the approval of GH¢158,936,458.00 for the Office of the Special Prosecutor for the 2026 financial year,” said the MP. “It is evident that the Office has drifted considerably from its core mandate, and in light of the substantial public resources allocated annually, I believe a reassessment of its priorities is both necessary and prudent.”

Baffour Awuah’s remarks raise important questions about the efficiency and accountability of public institutions, particularly in the allocation of taxpayer money. The MP emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Special Prosecutor’s Office is focused on its primary objective—fighting corruption and promoting transparency—while also aligning its budget with these goals.

The debate continues to spark discussions across the political spectrum, with some lawmakers supporting Baffour Awuah’s call for a reassessment, while others defend the allocation as vital for the effective operation of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
