BAWUMIA CALLS FOR DISCONTINUATION OF PROSECUTIONS UNDERTAKEN IN HIS NAME

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue prosecutions that have been initiated in his name.

This follows the arrest and arraignment of an organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Agona West, accused of publishing false news and making offensive comments about Dr. Bawumia.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia clarified that he had not lodged or sanctioned any complaint against the individual. He emphasised that he does not endorse such prosecutions and believes that free speech and truth are the best responses to falsehoods, not legal punishment.

“I have not lodged any complaint against the young man, nor have I sanctioned any prosecution in my name. I do not endorse such actions. I believe in free speech and that the best response to falsehood is truth, not punishment,” the statement read.

Dr. Bawumia urged the authorities to release the young man, stressing that he had forgiven him. He further appealed to political actors to focus on issues that matter to Ghanaians rather than resorting to actions that could stifle free expression.

The statement was signed by the Communications Directorate of Dr. Bawumia’s office, reinforcing his position that political discourse should be anchored on ideas and solutions rather than prosecutions.
