Former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of national mourning in honour of the more than 37 people who reportedly lost their lives in the devastating June 29 floods.
According to Dr. Aboagye, the victims deserve the same dignity and national recognition accorded to those who died in the recent military helicopter crash.
“We cannot behave as though the vulnerable souls who perished had no blood in their veins,” he said. “The blood of the 37-plus lives lost in the floods cries out for remembrance. Their lives mattered just as much as those of the distinguished heroes we mourned after the helicopter crash.”
He appealed directly to President Mahama, saying, “Mr. President, we respectfully appeal to you to declare a state of mourning in honour of the souls lost in the floods. Every Ghanaian life is precious, and every life deserves equal dignity, recognition and remembrance.”
Dr. Aboagye further criticised the government’s handling of the flood disaster, alleging that the administration has not done enough to address the situation or adequately support families who lost loved ones.
Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated relief items to victims affected by the June 29 floods following a visit to some of the hardest-hit communities.
The relief items were presented on his behalf by his Advisor on Gender and Social Protection, Akosua Asaa Manu.
The donation came after Dr. Bawumia toured flood-affected areas, where he met residents, sympathised with victims, and assessed the extensive damage caused by the torrential rains that submerged several communities across Accra.
The June 29 floods left dozens dead, displaced many families, and destroyed homes and property, prompting renewed calls for stronger flood prevention measures, improved drainage infrastructure, and enhanced disaster response across the country.
