I’m in Politics to Serve, Not to Get Rich” – Bawumia Tells Delegates

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his commitment to public service, stressing that his decision to enter politics was motivated by the desire to improve the lives of Ghanaians — not to amass wealth.

During his recent campaign tour in the Amenfi West constituency in the Western Region, Bawumia addressed a crowd of delegates, emphasizing the importance of transparency and integrity in leadership. He pointed to his track record of reducing costs and improving efficiency in government projects, citing the Mobile Money Interoperability project as a prime example.

“In the past, some political leaders have been accused of using their positions for personal enrichment. I am not like that,” Bawumia remarked. “I entered politics to serve the people, not to enrich myself.”

He went on to explain how the Mobile Money Interoperability project, which was initially set to cost the country a staggering 1.2 billion dollars under the NDC government, was completed for just 4.5 million dollars. This cost-saving initiative, Bawumia noted, has not only ensured that taxpayers’ money was better spent, but it has also led to the creation of thousands of jobs and increased financial inclusion for Ghanaians.

“This initiative has transformed lives. It has enabled millions of Ghanaians to access financial services in ways that were previously impossible,” Bawumia added. “My greatest joy comes from seeing the positive impact of projects like this, not from personal financial gain.”
