NHIS Crisis: Afenyo-Markin Demands Health Minister Briefing as Zipline Shutdown, Unpaid Claims Threaten Rural Healthcare

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns over challenges facing the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), warning that delays in settling claims to service providers could threaten access to healthcare, particularly in rural communities.

Speaking in Parliament today, Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that about 20 million Ghanaians are currently enrolled in the NHIS, but outstanding claims to healthcare providers remain a pressing issue. He called on the Minister of Health to brief lawmakers on measures being taken to:
Settle Outstanding Claims – Ensure service providers are paid promptly.

Support Zipline Ghana – Address the 170 million cedis in unpaid claims that have led to the shutdown of three Zipline centers.

Zipline Ghana plays a vital role in delivering medications and emergency supplies to rural healthcare facilities. Its shutdown could significantly affect emergency medical care in these areas.

The Minority Leader highlighted several concerns, including potential reduced access to healthcare services, the disproportionate impact on rural communities, and disruptions to emergency medical care. He urged the Health Minister to provide the house with a detailed update on steps being taken to resolve these challenges.
