Accra, Ghana — The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally petitioned the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie, seeking the removal of Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, the presiding judge of Circuit Court 9 in Accra, over his handling of the criminal case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.
According to the petition, the NPP alleges that Judge Kunsong demonstrated bias and misconduct in his rulings, undermining the principles of fairness and impartiality expected of the judiciary. The party argues that his conduct in Abronye’s case has eroded public confidence in the courts and compromised the integrity of the judicial process.
The case against Abronye stems from charges of false publication and offensive conduct, after he alleged in a media interview that certain high-profile individuals were plotting to assassinate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Though Abronye was granted bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, the proceedings have remained politically charged, drawing sharp commentary from both supporters and critics of the NPP.
In its petition, the NPP insists that Judge Kunsong’s handling of the matter reflects a pattern of judicial overreach and selective application of the law. Party officials argue that his continued presence on the bench poses a threat to justice delivery and could set a dangerous precedent for politically sensitive cases.
The petition to the Chief Justice is expected to trigger a review process under the constitutional framework governing judicial accountability. If found to have breached judicial ethics, Judge Kunsong could face disciplinary action, including removal from office.
The move by the NPP underscores the heightened tensions ahead of the 2026 elections, with opposition figures accusing the government of weaponizing state institutions against dissenting voices. The petition also raises broader questions about the independence of Ghana’s judiciary and its ability to withstand political pressure.
