Ghana Road maintenance contractors in have threatened a protest at the Presidency over the delays of six years arrears.
The group, responsible for emptying gutters, desilting drains, and maintaining cleanliness at the shoulders of various roads in the country in preventing flooding tendencies are threatening to stage a protest at the Presidency over what they describe as six years of unpaid arrears.
The contractors, operating under the Single Man Contractors (SMC) Association, claimed their remuneration have not been honored after the completion of their certified works for the Ghana Highway Authority since 2020 despite several appeals for settlement.
In a petition to President John Dramani Mahama dated May 25, 2026, the group appealed for urgent intervention, stressing on the financial effects caused by the prolonged delayance of payments.
The group argued that lack of financial security is has taken a toll on the progress of their operations.
“As single man contractors, we undertook and completed the assigned work in good faith and according to the agreed terms. Despite several follow-ups with the Ghana Highway Authority, outstanding payment for the completed contract has still not been made,” a portion of the petition stated.
“The continued delay in settling this obligation has caused serious financial hardship and affected both our livelihood and ability to meet other commitments,” the petition added.
As the rainy season intensifies across the country, concerns over flooding have also increased.
This has raised panics across the country as contractors works play key role in keeping drains and waterways clear to reduce flood risks.
The contractors have issued warnings in regard to tje outstanding payments, staring that should the remuneration problem remains unresolved, members would be left with no option than to embark on a picketing exercise at the Jubilee House to draw attention to their grievances.
