The Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram is once again buzzing with youthful energy as it hosts the latest edition of the KGL Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship — a tournament that has fast become one of Ghana’s premier platforms for nurturing football talent.

Since its inception in 2021, the championship has grown in both stature and significance. It now serves not only as a vital talent pipeline for professional football but also as a unifying force across Ghana’s footballing regions. Over the years, several players discovered through the competition have gone on to shine in the Ghana Premier League and beyond.

This year’s tournament features teams from all ten football regions, each earning their place through regional colts league qualifiers. The Ashanti Region claimed the title in the maiden edition, while the Western Region enters this year’s contest as reigning champions, having narrowly defeated the Eastern Region 2-1 in last year’s thrilling final — also held in Prampram.

Julius Ben Emmunah, Head of Competitions at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the project lead for the 2025 edition, spoke about the championship’s core mission: talent development.

“We assess and refine the competition annually to ensure that its main goal — unearthing and nurturing young talent — remains at the forefront,” he said. “We want every player to have at least 40 minutes of playing time so scouts can properly evaluate them.”

He also highlighted the tournament’s recent expansion to include football academies, in addition to regional teams, broadening the talent pool and giving scouts more prospects to consider. “It’s all about creating more opportunities for players and giving academies a chance to showcase their talent as well,” Emmunah added.

The atmosphere in Prampram is electric, with fans, coaches, and scouts all eager to spot the next big star. For many young players, this isn’t just another tournament — it’s a golden opportunity to launch their football careers.

Joe Salam Abubakar, Vice Chairman of the KGL Regional U-17 Colts Championship, emphasized the tournament’s growing importance to Ghana’s football landscape.

“There’s a lot of passion and quality on display. Some of these players are already good enough to compete in the Premier League,” he noted. “With this level of talent and exposure, Ghana football stands to benefit greatly in the near future.”

Firmly established as a key stepping stone for young Ghanaian footballers, the KGL U-17 Championship continues to inspire regional pride while shaping the future of the game.

All eyes now turn to the grand finale of the 2025 KGL Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship, set to take place on Saturday, 27th September 2025, at Teshie McDan Park, where Ghana’s next generation of football stars will look to shine on the national stage.
