An aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Greater Accra Regional Organiser position, Emmanuel Austin Anim, popularly known as “El Supremo”, has blamed the party’s 2024 electoral defeat on a breakdown in relationships within its own ranks rather than a lack of public support.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (30 June), Anim said research conducted by his campaign team showed many NPP supporters deliberately stayed away from the polls because they felt neglected by party leadership.
“Our research revealed that we lacked relationship in the last four years before leaving office. The problem was within the MPP itself,” he said.
According to him, many grassroots members believed some party leaders had become disconnected from ordinary supporters after assuming office.
“Getting people to campaign for the MPP became a problem. Talking to our members, many felt some people saw themselves as better than them. They felt looked down upon.”
Anim argued that rebuilding trust between party executives and supporters would be his foremost priority if elected.
“My first step is relationship. Relationship matters a lot,” he stressed.
He said party leaders must remain accessible to members throughout the electoral cycle instead of appearing only during campaigns.
“You must respect your followers. Without them, you are nothing. Without the listeners, you are doing nothing. Without the grassroots, the party is nothing.”
The organiser hopeful said he would maintain a constant presence across Greater Accra by visiting constituencies regularly and engaging polling station executives every month.
“I’ll be visible to them. Don’t relate to them from afar. Go to them,” he said.
Anim added that party executives should not feel abandoned after elections.
“You don’t let people feel left out. Let them feel at home every time.”
He maintained that restoring confidence among party members would strengthen the NPP ahead of the 2028 general election.
