Akim Oda MP criticises Mahama over ‘not a priority’ comment on LGBTQ Bill

Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his recent comment that the anti-LGBTQ bill is not a priority, describing it as a disappointment to the Assemblies of God Ghana and the broader Christian community.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, the MP said the President’s stance undermines the confidence many churches had in him ahead of the elections.

According to him, during the campaign period, Mahama assured religious leaders and Ghanaians that he would sign the LGBTQ bill if given the mandate—a promise he believes contributed to the support he received from sections of the Christian community.

He noted that the President openly identified himself as a Christian and a member of the Assemblies of God, a declaration that was embraced by the church at the time.

However, Mr. Acquah argued that the President’s current position, suggesting the bill is not a priority, contradicts those earlier commitments.

He added that this shift has left many within the church feeling disappointed, insisting that the President’s comment does not reflect the expectations of those who supported him.
