Extortion scandal hits NIA: staff on interdiction; internal CID takes over probe

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has initiated a full-scale investigation into fresh allegations of extortion at its Sunyani Premium Registration Centre after a TikTok user accused staff of demanding unapproved payments for services.

NIA Chief Executive, William Yayra Koku Deku, says he has directed the Authority’s Internal CID Unit to conduct a thorough probe and submit a detailed report.

He stressed that any staff found culpable will face both disciplinary measures and legal prosecution.

“I’ve directed the NIA CID unit to conduct a thorough investigation and report on this matter. Any staff found guilty will face both disciplinary and legal action. Some staff are already on interdiction for similar offences,” the CEO stated in a Facebook post.

Commitment

The NIA maintains that its official fees remain unchanged, and no staff member is authorised to charge above the approved rates.

The Authority says it is committed to stamping out misconduct at all its centres, especially at premium facilities where extortion complaints have been recurring.

“The NIA remains committed to transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery,” Koku reaffirmed.

He encouraged the public to report any extortion attempts immediately, providing direct reporting channels to the Authority.

The Authority says collaboration with the public is key to rooting out corruption and restoring trust in the national ID registration system.
