“I led NPP to Ghana’s biggest electoral victory with 6.7 million votes” – John Boadu

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, says he oversaw the highest number of votes ever achieved in Ghana’s political history, 6.7 million in the 2020 elections, as he officially declared his intention to contest for the NPP’s National Chairmanship in 2026.

In a press statement released, Mr. Boadu said the NPP has drifted away from key groups that once supported it, including the youth, business community, middle class, clergy, and media.

He described the party’s current state in opposition as worrying, citing weakened parliamentary strength, job losses among party faithful, and what he called “a culture of silence” under the current NDC government.

“The only true way to restore hope, confidence, and the future of our people is for the NPP to win back power,” he said, stressing that unity and experienced leadership are critical for the party’s comeback.

Mr. Boadu, who served in the party for over three decades, said he has been tried and tested at every level of the NPP structure, from polling station chairman to general secretary. He argued that power is only possible when the party is strong, organised, and guided by experienced leadership.

Drawing from scripture, he likened his call to leadership to a divine mission to “rebuild and restore” the party, citing Psalm 89 and Isaiah 58 to describe himself as a servant prepared for the task.

He outlined five priorities for his leadership: rebuilding unity within the party, rebranding the NPP to restore public trust, strengthening internal security, mobilizing sustainable funding, and modernising campaigns with technology and data-driven strategies.

Backing his credentials with results, Mr. Boadu highlighted his role in leading the NPP to record-breaking victories.

“The highest number of votes ever achieved in Ghana’s political history, 6.7 million votes in 2020, was achieved under my watch as General Secretary and Director of Operations,” he stated.

He noted that the two biggest electoral wins in the NPP’s history, 5.7 million votes in 2016 and 6.7 million in 2020, were achieved during his tenure. He also credited his team with developing the Pink Sheet Tracking System, a major innovation in Ghana’s electoral operations, and with introducing monthly subventions to all party constituencies.

Mr. Boadu said he believes the NPP’s path back to power lies in experienced, unifying leadership that can heal divisions and restore confidence. “This is not a time for experiments,” he said.

“The NPP needs stability, unity, and leadership that is tested, tolerant, and focused on results.”

He described the 2028 general elections as a defining moment for the NPP, warning that the party cannot afford to remain in opposition for long.

“We may be going through challenging times now, but this storm will pass. Together, we shall make the NPP great again and we will win the 2028 elections,” he concluded.
