Lawyers denied access to Abronye DC despite health concerns – Oppong Nkrumah alleges

Lead counsel for Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has alleged that lawyers representing the embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman have been denied access to their client despite concerns about his health.

According to him, members of the legal team have repeatedly been prevented from meeting Abronye DC while he remains in custody.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah claimed that although some party officials had been allowed to visit the NPP chairman, his lawyers were being moved between the police and the National Intelligence Bureau whenever they sought access.

“We have not been granted access to Abronye. Some party leaders have been able to see him, but his lawyers have not been given access. When we go, they keep tossing us from the police to the NIB,” he stated.

The former Information Minister disclosed that Abronye DC’s wife was permitted to see him on Saturday and later informed the legal team that his health condition was deteriorating.

“His wife was allowed to see him on Saturday and she brought us information that his condition isn’t good,” he said.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of deliberately targeting opposition figures in an attempt to suppress dissenting voices.

“It is a deliberate tactic the government is using to suppress opposition voices,” he alleged.

According to him, more than 16 members of the NPP have so far been arraigned before the courts over comments allegedly made against the government.

“So far they have arraigned over 16 of our members before the courts simply because of things they have said about the government that they don’t agree with,” he claimed.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further argued that democratic governance requires tolerance for opposing views and differing political opinions.

“In a democracy, you must be willing to tolerate dissenting voices. Not everyone will agree with you. The tenets of our democracy allow free speech,” he added.
