Minority calls for removal of Lands Minister after Lithium deal withdrawal

The Minority in Parliament has demanded the resignation of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, or his dismissal by President John Dramani Mahama following the withdrawal of a contentious lithium agreement from Parliament.

The Minority said its call is based on concerns that the agreement contained significant inaccuracies and failed to protect the country’s best interests. The document was withdrawn a week after being laid before Parliament, with the Ministry explaining that the decision was to allow for broader consultations with industry players and affected communities.

Speaking to the media at Parliament on December 17, 2025, the Minority, through the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Assafuah, accused the Minister of failing to exercise due diligence in the preparation of the agreement. He noted that the Minister had earlier defended the document publicly, only to later withdraw it, a move the Minority says undermines his credibility.

According to the Minority, the submission of what they described as a flawed agreement to Parliament demonstrates a lack of regard for the national interest. They further accused the Minister of misleading the Ghanaian public on the matter.

The Minority concluded that the developments surrounding the lithium agreement show that Minister Kofi-Buah can no longer be entrusted with the management of the country’s natural resources, reinforcing their call for his immediate resignation or removal from office.
