The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended executive committee elections in the Afigya Sekyere East and Asante Akyem Central constituencies of the Ashanti Region, after courts issued interim injunctions restraining the party from proceeding with the polls.
The directive, contained in a memorandum dated 6 July, was issued by the party’s National Steering Committee and signed by the Acting National Chairman.
The memorandum, addressed to the Ashanti Regional Steering Committee, said the party had been served with interim injunctions and subsequent motions on notice issued by courts of competent jurisdiction.
The orders restrain the NPP from conducting or supervising the constituency executive elections in the two constituencies until the pending applications are determined or the courts order otherwise.
Copies of the directive were also sent to the constituency elections committees and constituency executive committees in Afigya Sekyere East and Asante Akyem Central.
The National Steering Committee said the NPP would comply with the court orders, describing itself as a law-abiding political party committed to upholding the rule of law.
It said the party would, however, instruct its lawyers to take the necessary legal steps to challenge the injunctions and seek to have them set aside.
The committee directed that all activities relating to the constituency executive elections in the two Ashanti constituencies be suspended with immediate effect until further notice.
