Presidential Staffers Act as Deputy Ministers – Miracles Aboagye Criticises Mahama Govt

Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised the Mahama-led government, arguing that it is not running a lean administration despite claims to the contrary.

According to Mr Aboagye, the true size of government cannot be measured solely by the number of ministers appointed. He said many presidential staffers under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government perform roles similar to those of deputy ministers.

He noted that although the government has appointed 56 ministers, several individuals who would typically hold ministerial or deputy ministerial positions are instead serving as presidential staffers at the Jubilee House.

Mr Aboagye explained that these staffers often wield significant authority and influence, making their functional roles comparable to those of deputy ministers.

Drawing from his experience under the Akufo-Addo administration, he said serving as a presidential staffer comes with responsibilities and powers similar to those assigned to deputy ministers.

“From my experience as a presidential staffer under former President Akufo-Addo, that position is effectively equivalent to a deputy minister,” he stated.

He concluded that any fair assessment of the cost and size of government must consider not just ministers and deputies, but also the number and functions of political appointees operating within the Office of the President.
