Two Ghanaian citizens have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ghana Police Service, calling for an investigation and possible arrest of radio broadcaster Mugabe Maase over allegations that some police commanders were supplying firearms to armed robbers.
In a letter dated 25 May and addressed to the IGP in Accra, the petitioners said the claims, if false, could undermine public confidence in law enforcement and threaten national security.
They urged the police leadership to “as a matter of urgency” investigate the allegations and invite or arrest Maase to assist with evidence, according to the petition seen by Asaase News.
Details
The petition cited provisions of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), arguing that the alleged statements could constitute publication of false news or misleading electronic communication.
The complainants also called for action against any police officers found to be involved in criminal conduct, if the allegations are substantiated.
“We respectfully pray your office to… institute immediate investigations into the allegations,” the petition stated.
It also urged authorities to take steps to “preserve public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.”
Video evidence
The petitioners attached what they described as video evidence of the allegations, though the contents were not independently verified.
The Ghana Police Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Allegations of misconduct involving security personnel are sensitive in Ghana, where the police service has faced periodic scrutiny over professionalism and public trust.
