The Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani East, Baba Amando, has called on supporters to join an upcoming protest against what he describes as political intimidation and shrinking civic space.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (21 April), Amando said the demonstration — dubbed “Yɛnsuro” (We are not afraid) — is aimed at defending democratic freedoms.
“This is not about me alone. It is about everyone who could be subjected to this kind of treatment,” he said.
Framing the protest
Amando characterised the protest as a response to what he claims is a growing pattern of arrests targeting opposition figures and outspoken citizens.
“If we fail to stand together, we will not have a country in the next two years,” he warned.
He added that the protest is part of a broader series of actions the party intends to undertake.
Police clearance and participation
According to him, the demonstration has been communicated to the police, who are expected to provide security.
“The police are aware… they have even given us personnel to protect us,” he said, adding that the protest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m.
He indicated that party leadership, including members of the parliamentary minority, are expected to participate.
Amando also framed the protest as a defence of freedom of expression, arguing that current actions undermine constitutional protections.
“We allowed people to express themselves freely before. Why are others now being silenced?” he questioned.
He urged the public and media to cover the demonstration, describing it as a stand against intimidation and for democratic accountability.
