KUMASI, ASHANTI REGION – Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has dismissed claims that he criticised the party’s National Council, insisting his comments were taken out of context.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Antwi-Boasiako said recent remarks made during his engagement with party members had been misconstrued by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Kodua had earlier cautioned supporters to disregard statements attributed to the Ashanti chairman and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC).

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online,” Wontumi said.

“The National Council of the NPP never featured in any of the statements I made to the people.”

Precedent

The Ashanti chairman argued that his comments had focused on the party’s electoral history and how Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer in the 2024 elections, could build momentum towards 2028.

He drew parallels to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who lost in 1996 with 39% of the vote but was given a second chance by the party in 1998, eventually winning power in 2000.

“In the same way, Dr Bawumia is looking for just 9% to win the NPP the 2028 election,” Wontumi said.

AI-agenda

He criticised Kodua for issuing what he described as an “unfortunate” statement without first seeking clarification, warning that propaganda and misinformation could divide the party.

“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Mr Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding of my statements before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” he added.
