Akim Swedru Member of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko has questioned the government’s reported expenditure of nearly GH¢11 billion on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, demanding clarity on how the funds were utilised.

The legislator raised concerns about the expenditure in a post shared on his official Facebook page, arguing that the reported amount requires further explanation because, according to him, the main engineering and civil works for the project are yet to begin.

Mr. Osei Nyarko said it was “ridiculous and preposterous” for such a large amount to have allegedly been spent when the project has not yet been awarded to a contractor for full construction activities.

“Government claims that it spent almost GH¢11 billion in 2025 on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. This is ridiculous and preposterous because this project is even yet to be awarded to a contractor for the actual engineering and civil works to commence,” he stated.

The MP questioned the purpose for which the money was allegedly spent and called on the government, particularly the Finance Minister, to provide details on the expenditure.

He argued that the Finance Ministry plays a central role in managing government spending on major programmes and projects, making accountability necessary.

“The Government and the Finance Minister (Ato Forson) should explain to the good people of the country how these monies were expended since it’s the Finance Minister who controls the spending for all these Government’s flagship programs,” Mr. Osei Nyarko said.

The lawmaker further raised concerns about the status of the project’s preparatory activities, noting that clearing of the full Right of Way was reportedly incomplete.

“How do you say you have spent almost 11 billion on a project which the Military is even yet to complete the clearing of the entire Right of Way?” he questioned.

Mr. Osei Nyarko called for transparency, asking government to disclose the beneficiaries of the reported payments and provide timelines for when the funds were released.

“Which contractor or agency were these monies paid to and when exactly were these monies paid to them?” he asked.
