Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained in the Netherlands, Parliament has confirmed.
In a statement released on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, said the Independent MP was being held at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The statement said parliamentary leaders, including the Speaker of Parliament, were in contact with Ghana’s embassy in The Hague to gather more information about the incident.
No official reason has yet been given for the detention.
“The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement added.
People close to the lawmaker say he left Ghana on Saturday evening and arrived in Amsterdam on Sunday morning, where he was allegedly stopped by security officials before passing through immigration checks.
The development follows earlier allegations linking Mr Frimpong to suspected financial crimes and human trafficking-related activities, claims he has publicly denied.
Reports circulating in recent months alleged that US law enforcement agencies had investigated the MP over suspected financial offences connected to an African restaurant and supermarket business in Chicago.
According to the allegations, the business was suspected of being used to move fraudulent funds connected to individuals currently serving prison sentences in the United States.
The reports further claimed that the FBI had monitored activities linked to the business for several years after an alleged raid on the premises. During the operation, several women said to have travelled from the United Kingdom to the United States were reportedly arrested over bank accounts allegedly used in transferring funds.
The women were reported to be Ghanaian-British nationals.
Mr Frimpong has previously rejected the allegations, describing them as attempts by unnamed individuals to damage his reputation.
“There are people who ignore all the positive things I have been doing. Instead, they focus on spreading lies and wishing me ill,” he said in an earlier response.
