Ghana’s parliament said on Tuesday it was seeking details from the country’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands after the independent lawmaker for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
In a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House confirmed reports of the detention and said Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and parliamentary leadership were in contact with Ghana’s mission in The Hague to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the statement said.
Parliament said the public would be updated as more information becomes available.
The statement did not disclose the reasons for the detention or indicate whether charges had been filed against the legislator.
Frimpong represents the Asante Akyem North constituency in the Ashanti Region as an independent member of parliament.
