Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback, with defender Alexander Djiku expected to miss the tournament due to injury concerns.
The experienced centre-back was named in head coach Carlos Queiroz’s 28-man provisional squad but arrived at the Black Stars’ training camp in Cardiff carrying an injury sustained during Spartak Moscow’s Russian Cup final victory over FC Krasnodar.
Djiku was forced off during the final before Spartak Moscow went on to lift the trophy after a penalty shootout triumph. Since reporting to national team camp, the 28-year-old has been unable to participate fully in training, raising serious doubts over his availability for the World Cup.
With Queiroz expected to reduce his provisional squad to 26 players ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Djiku is now widely tipped to be omitted from the final roster.
While no official decision has been announced, the defender’s fitness remains a major concern, leaving the technical team weighing potential alternatives in the heart of defence.
