Court remands Abronye DC over failure to surrender Passport

The Accra High Court has ordered the remand of Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, into police custody after he failed to comply with a court directive requiring him to surrender his passport as part of his bail conditions.

The Criminal Division of the High Court issued the order after dismissing an application filed by Abronye seeking a variation of the bail conditions imposed on him in an ongoing criminal case.

The court held that the NPP stalwart had failed to adhere to the terms attached to his bail, particularly the requirement to deposit his passport with the court registry.

As a result, the court revoked the relief previously granted and ordered that he remain in police custody until he complies with the directive.

Abronye DC was absent from court when the ruling was delivered.

The Bono Regional Chairman is facing a charge of false publication in a case brought against him by the State.

Last month, the High Court granted him bail after he had earlier been remanded following his arraignment on the charge. Among the conditions attached to the bail was an order for him to surrender his passport and other travel documents to the court.

However, his alleged failure to comply with that directive prompted him to file an application seeking a variation of the bail conditions.

The court, however, found no basis to grant the request and instead enforced its earlier order, directing that he be taken into custody until the travel documents are deposited with the registry of the court.

The ruling underscores the court’s insistence on strict compliance with bail conditions and marks a significant development in the case.

The substantive criminal matter remains pending and is expected to continue before the Circuit Court, where proceedings on the false publication charge are ongoing.
