Ghana Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, in a bid to strengthen the squad’s campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, 73, brings extensive international experience, having previously coached teams such as Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and South Africa, as well as clubs including Real Madrid. The appointment is understood to be on a short-term contract focused primarily on navigating the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the tournament proper in the United States, Canada and Mexico, should Ghana qualify.

The move follows the departure of Otto Addo, whose tenure ended after a series of mixed results. The GFA is reported to have prioritised Queiroz’s tactical expertise and proven record of guiding national teams to major competitions. Discussions are said to centre on a performance-based review after the 2026 finals.

The Black Stars have faced challenges in recent qualification cycles, with inconsistent performances raising concerns over squad depth, tactical cohesion and player management. Queiroz’s arrival is expected to inject discipline and strategic planning into the team as Ghana seeks to return to the global stage after missing the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The success of the appointment will likely depend on clear communication between the technical team, the GFA and players, as well as effective integration of domestic talent.

Ghana’s football administration has emphasised the need for stability and results in the lead-up to 2026. The GFA will now focus on finalising contractual details and assembling a support staff capable of supporting Queiroz in delivering competitive performances.

As preparations intensify, attention turns to the qualifiers and the potential for the Black Stars to secure one of Africa’s slots at the expanded 48-team World Cup. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see whether Queiroz can restore confidence and deliver the consistency required at the highest level.
