There appears to be fresh winds of hope sweeping across the Yendi constituency of the NPP as many party delegates, youth groups and sympathisers appear to be signaling their preference for one Lawyer Issifu Wunzooma Amadu, son of a revered Islamic cleric and a UP stalwart, the late Zohe Limam Amadu as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2028 elections.
The Yendi constituency, which is traditionally an NPP stronghold risk becoming an NDC playground for a long time, as a result of the prolonged and unhealthy political rivalry between the fromer MP Farouk Aliu Mahama and former MASLOC CEO Habibata Shani Mahama, both of whom are still eyeing the seat.
This unhealthy rivalry played out in the last two parliamentary primaries of the NPP between Farouk Aliu Mahama and Habibata Shani Mahama, which eventually resulted in the painful loss of the seat by the NPP to the NDC.
According to the camp of Farouk Aliu Mahama, their camp’s defeat was as a result of a sabotage from within, by the camp of Habibata Shani Mahama and have sworn heaven and earth to avenge should Habibata Shani Mhama also becomes the party’s candidate anytime in the future.
It is obvious a path of rivalry and internal sabotage has been cleared by both camps, and supporters of both Farouk and Habibata have committed to walk the route until each undo the other.
Supporters of both camps have thus taken entrenched positions never to support the other camp’s candidate and either side will work to ensure the defeat of the other in any future parliamentary elections.
As things stand now, the battle lines are clear; Yendi NPP is sharply divided along the camps of these two personalities, and all persuasions and reconciliatory measures have yielded no dividends, since neither camp is ready to back down in this battle of sabotage.
The emergence of Lawyer Wunzooma Amadu in the political scene therefore appears to many party faithfuls as an opportunity to unite the party.
This was signaled by the huge turn out of members of both camps within the Yendi NPP, as well as supporters of the independent candidate in the last elections at a presentation ceremony of 100 bags of cement and GHC 20,000.00 by lawyer Amadu Wunzooma towards the construction of the party’s constituency office.
It was a sight to behold as tens of party delegates, communicators and support groups across the camps trooped to lawyers Amadu’s residence near the Municipal Police Headquarters after the presentation ceremony to pledge their support and urged him to consider contesting for the parliamentary candidacy in the next primaries.
Chiefs, opinion leaders and political well-wishers feel this portrays lawyer Wunzooma Amadu as the best person to end the era of camps and sabotage and unite Yendi NPP, they see his candidacy as a perfect opportunity for the NPP to propel itself to victory in Yendi once again.
