Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has downplayed the seriousness of his ongoing criminal case at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing it as “useless.”

In a video circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Abdul-Hamid is heard saying, “I came to support my friend Wontumi, me my matter deɛ, it is useless, there is nothing in it.” The comment was made during his visit to the court premises to show solidarity with Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is also facing separate legal proceedings.

The remark has sparked public debate, with many questioning his dismissal of a case involving serious corruption and financial crime allegations.

The OSP is prosecuting Dr. Abdul-Hamid on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit extortion, extortion by a public officer, using public office for profit, and money laundering.

According to the OSP, he and two other NPA officials allegedly engaged in a scheme that caused the State and petroleum sector losses exceeding GH¢291 million and over US$330,000.

Investigations have already led to the seizure and freezing of assets valued at more than GH¢100 million and over US$100,000, with additional assets still being traced.

Despite these developments, Dr. Abdul-Hamid maintains that the case lacks substance, insisting he has no reason for concern.

The matter is expected to continue at the Criminal High Court in Accra on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
