New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Kweku Osei Korankyi Asiedu, widely known as KOKA, has been granted bail of 50,000 Ghana cedis after police invited him for questioning over allegations of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace linked to a viral video, his legal team said on Monday.
KOKA is required to report to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Friday (29 May) as investigations continue, the sources said.
The police invitation followed circulation of a video in which KOKA was alleged to have threatened a police officer during an altercation.
Reaction
However, his lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, denied the claims, saying the comments in the video referred to an internal party security member nicknamed “Police” or “Boryor” and not the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, Afoakwa said the individual involved was part of the party’s security detail and that the interaction had been misunderstood because of the use of the word “police”.
“The person involved is part of the party’s internal security structure. The reference was to a nickname and not the Ghana Police Service,” he said.
Jovial interaction
He described the incident as a “jovial interaction” between party members rather than a threat against law enforcement officers.
According to the lawyer, KOKA cooperated fully with investigators after honouring the police invitation on Monday.
“He respects the Ghana Police Service and would never threaten any officer,” Afoakwa said.
