NPP considers legal action against Alan Kyerematen over use of ‘United Party’ name

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Kabiru, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal action against Alan Kyerematen over the use of “United Party” as the name for his new political movement.

According to him, the name is “problematic” because the NPP’s political roots trace back to the historic United Party (UP) tradition.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based GHOne TV, Kabiru accused the former Trade Minister of attempting to “hide under the flag” of the UP legacy, warning that the move could mislead Ghanaians and distort the country’s political history.

He disclosed that the NPP may seek a court ruling on the legality of the name, saying, “I’m sure fair-minded Ghanaians and members of the Republic will test it in court to find out what that name is. Of course, it is a very good case to test to see whether that name will even stand.”

Kabiru added that Alan Kyerematen and his team should have been “more thoughtful” in choosing a name for their new party.
