Oforikrom MP: NaCCA DG must face probe over LGBTQ content

Michael Aidoo, Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, has raised serious concerns over the inclusion of LGBTQ-related content in a Physical Education teacher manual, describing the move as “intentional” and highly concerning.

Speaking to Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 15, he rejected the apology rendered by NaCCA’s Director-General, Professor Samuel Ofori Bekoe, stressing that introducing such content in teacher training materials goes against Ghanaian cultural norms and requires accountability.

“If we are to go by just an apology, these things will continue to happen. This is something Ghanaians have been talking about for years. We do not want it,” he stated.

He urged NaCCA’s Director-General to step aside to allow a thorough investigation to uncover the root cause of the issue and ensure that those responsible are appropriately sanctioned.

“Even if they were aware or not, looking at how the issue has come out, they think the right thing is to apologise. But we are calling for an inquiry because we do not want this to end here.

“We want to know how it happened and who deliberately caused this to happen. The person in charge must step aside to allow the inquiry to continue so we can get to the bottom of this issue,” he added.

Meanwhile, NaCCA has since recalled the printed copies of the manual, acknowledging that certain content on “Gender Identity” did not align with Ghanaian culture, norms, and values.

The Council has assured the public that corrective measures are being taken to ensure that future teacher manuals reflect local cultural standards.
