OIL SURGES PAST $100 A BARREL AS RED SEA TANKER ATTACKS FUEL GLOBAL SUPPLY DISRUPTION FEARS

International crude oil prices broke back through the $100-per-barrel mark on Thursday, spurred by fresh attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and heightened geopolitical risks along critical Middle Eastern trade routes.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, spiked over 6.9% to reach $100.64 per barrel, marking its highest trading level in nearly two months. Simultaneously, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude surged over 5.8% to $91.83 a barrel.

Houthi Naval Blockade Escalates Trade Disruptions

The sudden price surge follows reports from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claiming targeted missile and drone strikes against two Saudi Arabian crude tankers—identified as the Encelia and the Layla—in the Red Sea. The attacks were launched to enforce a newly declared maritime blockade targeting Saudi Red Sea ports.

The military escalation imperils the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a narrow bottleneck connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden that handles roughly 12% to 15% of global maritime trade and significant volumes of daily crude shipments.

“This is a stark reminder of how rapidly geopolitical volatility feeds directly into global energy markets,” stated Lucy Smith, Senior Investment Manager at Killik & Co. “While this immediate spike reflects risk premiums around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, any sustained impairment of critical shipping routes will keep global flows restricted and prices elevated.”

Inflationary Pressures and Financial Market Reactions

The sudden rally in crude prices reverberated across global financial markets, rekindling fears of persistent headline inflation and tighter central bank monetary policy:

  • Equity & Bond Markets: Wall Street and European indices slipped during Thursday trading, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.71% as investors recalibrated expectations for interest rate cuts.
  • Retail Fuel Costs: U.S. national average gasoline prices climbed to $4.09 per gallon, reflecting immediate downstream pass-through from rising crude inputs.
  • Shipping Rerouting: Maritime analytics indicate multiple commercial vessels and oil carriers have already diverted routes away from the Red Sea, adding transit days and freight surcharges to global supply lines.

Analysts at Oxford Economics warned that shipping disruptions along key Middle Eastern maritime corridors are likely to persist, forecasting Brent crude to remain elevated well above baseline projections through the remainder of the year.
