Salaga residents protest years of unstable power supply

Residents of Salaga took to the streets on Wednesday to protest what they describe as years of unreliable electricity supply that has crippled businesses and disrupted daily life.

The protest, led by a youth group in the area, was aimed at pressing the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to fix the town’s erratic power situation. Demonstrators said the outages have gone on for more than a decade, with no lasting solution in sight.

“We are fed up with the power outages, yet NEDCo officials are not saying anything. In a day, the lights go off over 20 times,” one protester said. Others complained that frequent power cuts have damaged electrical appliances and forced many small businesses, especially welders and hairdressers, to shut down.

The poor power supply has also affected water distribution in Salaga and nearby communities, as the Ghana Water Company Limited struggles to pump water consistently.

The demonstrators, holding placards and chanting for action, issued a one-month ultimatum to NEDCo to fix the problem or face further protests.

Convener of the protest said residents were determined to continue demonstrating until their demands are met. “We have suffered for too long,” he said.

Management of VRA-NEDCo in Salaga has so far not responded to the concerns.
