Tension rises in Ofoase-Ayirebi as NPP holds coordinator elections despite court injunction

Tension is mounting in the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency of the Eastern Region after executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) allegedly proceeded with Electoral Area Coordinator elections despite a court injunction barring the exercise.

The Koforidua High Court had issued an interlocutory injunction restraining the party from conducting the elections scheduled between June 10 and June 15, 2026, following a suit filed by Samuel Agyei Donkor, Philip Badzi, Georgina French and Charles Nkruma.

According to court documents, the injunction was served on the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency Secretary, Awal Mohammed, and the Eastern Regional Secretary, Tony Osei-Adjei. The order restrained the party from undertaking any activities related to the Electoral Area Coordinator elections pending the determination of the case.

The plaintiffs contend that constituency executives breached the party’s election rules and regulations, including guidelines and timelines governing the 2026 membership registration exercise and internal party elections.

Despite the court order, reports indicate that elections were conducted in several electoral areas within the constituency, including Otwereso, Gyaha, Adubiase, Chia, Akokoaso, Eboom, Ofoase Kuma and Mepomuda.

Voting is reported to have taken place in the Chia Electoral Area despite the injunction.

The alleged disregard for the court order has heightened tensions within the constituency, with some party members questioning the decision to proceed with the elections while the matter remains before the court.

The development has sparked concerns among party faithful over adherence to internal electoral processes and compliance with judicial directives as the NPP continues preparations for its internal elections.
