Transport Unions, Traders Demand Government Action to Protect Accra-CMB Lorry Park

Transport unions and traders have petitioned President John Mahama to safeguard the Accra-CMB Lorry Park from what they describe as illegal encroachment by private developers.

The petition, presented at the Flagstaff House, was led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in collaboration with the Container Owners Association. According to the groups, the CMB station was officially designated for transport operators by government in 1985 and has since served as a major hub linking Accra to all 16 regions.

“Traders later joined us, and together we’ve been serving the people of Ghana,” said Samuel Amoah, Deputy National PRO of the GPRTU.

The unions allege that the land is being unlawfully taken over by private developers, who often move in at night under the protection of land guards to erect shops. This, they argue, has created insecurity for drivers and traders.

The situation has forced commercial vehicles to park along the streets to pick up passengers, while traders operate on roadways, worsening congestion and endangering lives.

Mr. Amoah appealed to the President to take urgent steps to reclaim the land and restore order so that drivers and traders can work in a safe and organized environment.
