Why reduce OSP powers if it helps fight corruption? — CENS Africa boss questions move

Executive Director of CENS Africa, Dr Paa Kwesi Eduaful Abaidoo, has questioned moves to limit the powers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), arguing that such actions could weaken Ghana’s fight against corruption.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, he acknowledged that the Attorney-General’s Department may be acting within constitutional bounds but insisted that the broader national interest must be considered.

According to him, the key issue should not only be what the Constitution permits, but whether the OSP, in its current form, is effective in addressing corruption.

He argued that if the institution is delivering on its mandate and contributing meaningfully to the anti-corruption agenda, then efforts should be made to strengthen, not weaken it.

“If the Office of the Special Prosecutor is helping us fight corruption, why reduce its powers? We should rather strengthen it to function well,” he said.

Dr Abaidoo stressed that the Constitution should serve the needs of the people and not be used to undermine institutions that are beneficial to national development.
