Accra, Ghana — The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail to the tune of GH¢100,000 after appearing before court on charges linked to alleged false publications.
Abronye DC was arraigned following claims he made in a media interview that certain high-profile individuals were plotting to assassinate the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The police subsequently invited him for questioning, after which he was charged and put before court.
The presiding judge granted him bail with two sureties, setting the stage for a legal battle that has already attracted significant public attention. Supporters of the NPP gathered outside the court premises, describing the case as politically motivated and insisting that Abronye DC was exercising his right to free speech.
Legal analysts note that the case underscores the tension between Ghana’s laws on false publication and freedom of expression. While the police maintain that such allegations, if unsubstantiated, can endanger public peace and security, critics argue that the charges reflect an attempt to silence political opponents.
Abronye DC, known for his fiery rhetoric and outspoken defense of the NPP, has vowed to contest the charges vigorously. His lawyers have indicated that they will challenge the basis of the prosecution, insisting that the statements he made were taken out of context.
The case is expected to resume in the coming weeks, with the court set to determine whether the charges of false publication and offensive conduct can be sustained. For now, Abronye DC remains free on bail, but the proceedings are likely to fuel political debate as Ghana inches closer to the 2026 elections.
