Akufo-Addo secretly working to overturn party’s decision on early primaries – NPP Group alleges

A pressure group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Patriotic Movement, has alleged that former President Nana Akufo-Addo is secretly working to overturn the party’s recent decision to hold early presidential primaries and expand the electoral college.

According to the group, Akufo-Addo is lobbying groups and individuals to oppose the proposed amendments during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday.

The Patriotic Movement claims Akufo-Addo’s actions are motivated by a desire to maintain control over the party’s leadership and decision-making processes.

By pushing for late primaries, the former President allegedly aims to consolidate his influence within the party and ensure his preferred candidates emerge victorious.

The group in a press release said this move is seen as a power play to dictate the party’s future direction.

In June, the NPP resolved to adopt a top-down approach by holding early congress on January 31 to elect the party’s flagbearer.

The decision was hailed as a masterstroke to address internal conflicts.

A Delegates Conference is scheduled for July 19 to affirm this decision, which includes former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) participating in the polls.

The Patriotic Movement has warned Akufo-Addo to refrain from undermining the party’s efforts to build unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

They argue that early primaries and inclusivity will foster holistic unity within the party.

The group is appealing to all stakeholders, including former President Kufuor and Akufo-Addo, to support this move towards unity and inclusiveness.

This internal conflict raises questions about the party’s future and its ability to present a united front for the upcoming elections.
