The Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency to tackle the escalating crisis of illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the country.

The group expressed frustration over the government’s perceived inaction in addressing the issue, despite highlighting the dangers of illegal mining.

Speaking at a press conference, Okatakyie Mensah Afrifa, Convener of Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS), alluded that galamsey is a national issue that transcends political affiliations.

“We need to come together and fight against illegal mining,” Afrifa emphasized. “Galamsey does not know NPP or NDC. If our water bodies are destroyed, we will all drink from them, regardless of our political color.”

The GRPS is calling on all Ghanaians to join hands in demanding action from the government. “It is time for Ghanaians to put aside their differences and work together to protect the country’s natural resources.”

To press home their demands, the GRPS has planned a demonstration on Monday, April 28, 2025. The group is urging all Ghanaians to join them in demanding that the government takes concrete measures to address the galamsey menace.

Kwame Appiah Kubi, Convener of the group, highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey) on the environment, communities, and society as a whole.

According to Kubi, the nation is well aware of the issues surrounding galamsey and its negative impacts on communities and lives.

He emphasized that the practice is “eating away at every aspect of our society” and that some individuals are prioritizing quick enrichment over responsible and regulated mining practices.

Kubi stressed that the lack of regulation in the mining sector has led to widespread problems, and it is imperative that urgent action is taken to address the issue.
