Dr Opoku Prempeh rallies NPP base behind Dr Bawumia ahead of January 31 primaries

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has called on party members—particularly in the Ashanti Region—to unite solidly behind Dr Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Engaging former party officers, Dr Opoku Prempeh described the meeting as a reaffirmation of one of the NPP’s most notable internal reforms: the inclusion of former officers in key decision-making processes, especially in the selection of party leadership.

“One recognisable and commendable reform of our party, the New Patriotic Party, has been the decision to allow former officers to have an active say in decision-making, particularly in choosing who leads the party,” he stated.

He paid tribute to the patriarchs and matriarchs of the NPP, acknowledging their enduring commitment since the party’s formation in 1991.

According to him, these party elders stood firm through challenging periods and contributed significantly to the party’s growth and electoral successes.

Dr Opoku Prempeh stressed that the NPP’s long-term sustainability depends on its ability to continually recognise and honour the sacrifices of its elder statesmen and women.

“The only way we can become an enduring political tradition is by consistently recognising and honouring the efforts of the generals who have sacrificed and laboured for the party on the battlefield,” he said.

He further emphasised that the discipline, experience and institutional memory of former party officers remain central to the NPP’s strength and renewal, particularly as the party prepares to make critical leadership decisions.

Dr Opoku Prempeh made these remarks during engagements with former NPP officers in the Ashanti Region, as part of broader consultations aimed at strengthening party unity and mobilising support ahead of the January 31 presidential primaries and the 2024 general elections.

He urged party members to uphold unity, respect the party’s base and work collectively toward victory, stressing that leadership must remain grounded in service, humility and shared responsibility.
