Ghana FA Plans Friendly Against Austria After Germany for World Cup Build-Up

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively working to arrange a series of high-profile friendly matches as part of the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, the association is currently in discussions with Austria about a potential friendly match, which would follow their game against Germany in March.

With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, the Black Stars are gearing up for their fifth appearance at the prestigious tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As part of their strategy to fine-tune the squad, the Black Stars will first face Germany in Stuttgart on March 30, 2026. This match is set to be a key test for the team as they look to build momentum ahead of the summer tournament.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Asante Twum confirmed that Austria is one of several potential opponents being considered for an additional friendly, likely to be played shortly after the Germany clash. “Austria is one of the teams we are talking to play after the Germany friendly game, and once the contract is signed, we will make it official to the public,” he revealed.

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign in Group L, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia. Their first match is scheduled for June 17 against Panama in Toronto, followed by a showdown with England in Boston and a final group-stage clash with Croatia in Philadelphia.

After a disappointing exit in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ghana is aiming for a stronger performance in 2026. The expanded format, with 48 teams instead of 32, offers new opportunities, and Ghana will be eager to capitalize on this as they seek to make a deeper run in the tournament.

Asante Twum emphasized the importance of these friendly matches in preparing the team for the challenges ahead, stating, “These games are critical for our squad to gain cohesion and sharpen their competitive edge.”
